We say: The Guide is Pearl Izumi's first control shoe. The company took its rearfoot SyncroFrame stability feature-first introduced in the Float-and extended it, resulting in a much more supportive shoe. The outsole grooves are deeper in the heel, designed to isolate and diffuse impact forces. The extra cushioning in the forefoot makes for a softer feel at toe-off. It's the stiffest shoe in this review, so it's a good choice for bigger runners with normal to low arches seeking maximum support.
Wear-testers say: "Stable and cushioned, but the wide tread grooves pick up small rocks."-James Haynes, 35, San Diego
"I need stability, so these are the first Pearl Izumis I've been able to wear comfortably."-John Fraas, 25, East Lansing
