Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
Puma continues to struggle to find the right formula in the cushioned category. The Phasis is the successor to the Prevail, which didn't gain much of a following, and it's doubtful the Phasis will either. Its midsole is simply too firm for a cushioned shoe. The culprit is the LD cell in the rearfoot, which is strong and durable, but doesn't compress easily enough to absorb rearfoot shock (unless you're a big runner). We've categorized the Phasis as a cushioned shoe (because of its single-density midsole), but it isn't cushioned enough to satisfy most runners who wear single-density cushioned shoes. Nor is the ride especially smooth from the firm, stable heel to the ultra-flexible forefoot.
Recommended for: Efficient runners, underpronators with high arches, and forefoot-strikers who prefer a firm midsole.
Bottom line: In our opinion, the Phasis is much too firm in the rearfoot. It's the second firmest shoe of all those we tested, and isn't suitable for most runners looking for a cushioned ride.
Lab Report:

Responsiveness: Moderate (the forefoot is flexible but the heel-toe-transiiton is awkward)

Cushioning: Very firm (cell units in rearfoot and forefoot)
Wear Tester Reviews
Wear-test reports:
"I like the Phasis for its comfort and support. The toebox is roomy, and it's easy to run in. The heel cushioning felt a little uneven." --Cindy Wigman/East Lansing "The Phasis feels very light, but the support isn't enough for me. The Phasis lacks cushioning, especially in the forefoot. It is almost like running barefoot. They also became very uncomfortable on long runs." --Julie Woods/San Diego "I like the lightness, but don't like the heel-strike. It's too hard for me." --Stacey Avery/East Lansing
