Runner's World Awards:
Best Update
The 800 series of cushioned shoes is one of the most enduring -- and one of the best. New Balance periodically updates this shoe with minor changes, all of which have resulted in a near-perfect shoe.
The 880 was preceded by the 879, and the new version's midsole and outsole are virtually identical. Like most updates, the 880 comes with a new upper pattern, but it retains the snug midfoot and rounded toebox that so many bigger runners like. The upper also features more mesh for better ventilation. Built on New Balance's wider last, the 880 features an exceptional fit -- especially for bigger runners.
Our wear-testers loved the extremely cushioned, thick midsole, and the comfortable upper. The midsole/outsole package doesn't include any extraneous midfoot plastic support devices, which is good news for orthotics wearers. (Orthotics function better in combination with midsole foam.)

These shoes are absolutely perfect for people with high arches, they provide a light comfortable ride through the entire range of motion...From heel strike to toe off, the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned, the unique curved sole adds to the comfort level of the stride...the only downfall...They are totally ugly! (but who cares for the comfort..

These are great shoes, unless you have weak, low arches, which I do. But I put in a little green arch supporter and they are great for about 3 miles. Good fit though. Comfortable and they last a while..
