Runner's World Awards: Best Update
The 858 is built on a new last that's broader in the forefoot and more snug in the heel for a fit that accommodates more runners. New Balance put a seam-free lining in the upper to help keep blisters at bay. Additional flex grooves in the midsole make this version slightly more flexible, according to RW Shoe Lab tests, while the plastic arch support now lies below a layer of foam to smooth out the feel underfoot. Recommended for runners with lower arches looking for plenty of support.
"Good stability, but the upper needs to be more breathable." --Sean Steffer, 22, East Lansing
"The inner liner definitely made my feet more comfortable, but the shoe felt heavy." --Christopher Grages, 32, Allentown
"This was a very average shoe. Not really made for distance training as my knees felt a little pounded after a slow 7 mile run. I would only wear this shoe for short training or speed work." David Phillipes, 45, Allentown
"I loved the laces. They felt like they wrapped around my foot perfectly." Graham Depaolo, 24, Allentown
"The shoe gets the job done. It supports a larger runner and looks and feels like most other running shoes I have worn. The breathability could use some work as could the weight of the shoe." Mike Dunkle, 48, Allentown
"I seemed to have a little too much wiggle room in the forefoot. I usually like my shoes to fit a little more snug. It was a little too much shoe, especially cushioning wise. It's not the best shoe for grass or trail running." Thom Hunt, 49, San Diego

Everything old is new again. If you are loyal to NB and liked the 856, you will love these. After NB ruined what they did in the 856 by producing the 857, you will know what I mean. A great shoe once again..

I originally purchase the Adidas Supernova 10, however, I have one foot that did not quite fit the Adidas shoe. In the past I have always preferred Adidas and never had a problem with the width of the shoe. After trying on several shoes, this shoe fit the best. I had pain at first due to narrowness of the Supernova but once the injury healed I was able to run my best time to since I was 18. This shoe fits the wide foot great and is very comfortable on long runs. I would definitely recommend this shoe if you have a semi-wide shoe. .
