SLASH THE FAT

Three ways to lower the fat in your favorite party dip.

Start with a great base.
Instead of full-fat sour cream or cream cheese, choose lower-calorie options that still supply protein and calcium. Try:

>>blended beans (garbanzo, black), roasted peppers, eggplant

>>soft tofu or tofu yogurt

>>low-fat or fat-free cottage cheese, cream cheese, or plain Greek-style yogurt

Add to the mix.
Boost the taste and nutrients of your dip by stirring in your favorite flavors. Experiment with:

>>fresh herbs (cilantro, basil, rosemary)

>>fresh garlic and green onions

>>lime or lemon juice

>>fresh or dried hot peppers

Dip wisely.
Skip the fatty chips and crackers. Offer instead:

>>fresh vegetables (peppers, cucumbers, snap peas, radishes, baby carrots)

>>juicy fruit (orange sections, berries, banana wedges, star fruit, kiwi slices)

>>whole-wheat baked chips (Make your own by slicing whole-wheat pitas or tortillas into wedges, toss lightly in salt, pepper, and olive oil, then bake on a cookie sheet at 375°F until golden brown.)

Try these two recipes:

1. Savory White Christmas Bean Dip

2. Sweet Chocolate Twist
