FLAT FEET

Flat feet themselves are not a problem -- it is when runners with flat feet overpronate that injuries can occur

PUBLISHED 09/20/2001

Definition:

An inherited condition in which there is little or no arch to the bottom of the foot. (Note: Running cannot cause flat feet.)

Remedies:

Flat feet in themselves are not a problem. However, many runners with flat feet overpronate, and overpronation can cause problems in your feet, shins and knees. If running is giving you aches and pains, first check your shoes--a motion-control shoe with a straight last is best. Over-the-counter arch supports or orthotics can provide additional support. If none of these help, see a sports-oriented physician for custom-made orthotics.
