WINTER RUNNING SHOE GUIDE 2007

Slosh through the cold months of winter with these hot new running shoes.

PUBLISHED 10/29/2007

Nike Air Equalon 2

We Say: The original Equalon was a motion-control shoe, but this update is nothing like the original. We moved it into the stability category because it's the softest shoe in the guide and it might not provide bigger runners the support they need. Using lighter-weight foam, Nike built this version lower to the ground. Despite the low profile, it still has a supportive midsole post to help control overpronation. Also new in this update is a segmented heel designed to disperse impact forces. Recommended for lighter runners looking for a supportive shoe.

Wear-testers Say: "Fantastic. It had soft cushioning and good arch support." --Chris Hughes, 39, East Lansing
"I liked the way the shoe wrapped my arch." --Rique Campa, 51, East Lansing

Price: $130
Widths: Standard
Weight: 11.9 oz (M) 10.2 oz (W)

Puma Complete Thiella IV XCR

We Say: The updated Thiella is perfect for runners who do a combination of on- and off-road running. It incorporates deeper outsole lugs for added traction in the dirt and a screen that sits below the heel cushion unit to provide protection from sharp rocks and roots. RW Shoe Lab tests found the Thiella to have the stiffest forefoot and one of the firmest heels in this guide. Recommended for bigger runners with normal arches who want a waterproof shoe for cold, wet winter runs.

Wear-testers Say: "A true hybrid, offering aggressive traction and a firm sole with plenty of cushioning." --Kortney Whitmyer, 26, East Lansing
"I began to see some outsole wear after 125 miles." --George Tubon, 40, San Diego

Price: $110
Widths: Standard
Weight: 13.7 oz (M) 11.2 oz (W)

Saucony Progrid Paramount

We Say: This new shoe has a full-length plastic plate in the midsole that provides a smooth transition from heel-strike to toe-off. Lying above the plate is Saucony's Progrid cushioning system, which works like a tennis racket to supply a soft yet supportive landing, especially in the heel. RW Shoe Lab tests found the Paramount to be firm in the heel yet flexible in the forefoot. And wear-testers raved about the shoe's breathable upper. Recommended for runners with normal arches looking for a firm everyday training shoe.

Wear-testers Say: "A good, lightweight, comfortable shoe that breathes well." --Joe Puluer, 48, East Lansing
"Good cushioning, but the shoe should be lighter." --Kelly Stanton, 26, Allentown

Price: $165
Widths: Standard
Weight: 12.6 oz (M) 10.4 oz (W)
