RUNNING IN PLACE

10 top treadmills to keep you going year-round.

By Megan McMorris

From the August 2004 issue of Runner's World

Precor M9.35i
$4,000 / Programs: 22
Say you like to vary pace and incline frequently during workouts. With the M9.35i you're not forced to press the same button again and again. Its touch-sensitive buttons respond immediately--a nice feature when running fast. We also liked the lap-track visual on the console for speedwork and 5-K and 10-K distance-based programs. Since the belt is shorter than others (57 inches versus 60), the M9.35i is better suited for shorter runners. precor.com; 800-477-3267
Warranty: Lifetime frame and welds / 10 years parts / 1 year labor
Horsepower: 3.0
Belt size: 57 by 20 inches
Maximum speed/incline: 11 mph/15 percent
Programs include: 5k, 10k, 1 mile, 2 mile, distance goal, calorie goal, track, weight loss, walk in the park, random, fitness test, 2 custom, 3 interval, and 5 Heart Rate
Heart rate interactive: yes

True Z5.4 HRC
$4,000 / Programs: 14
Our testers consistently found the Z5.4 to be quiet, soft, stable, and smooth underfoot. They also liked the bright display and found the programs easy to navigate. Plus, you can adjust the belt's cushioning to one of 12 preset levels with a convenient side lever. (Another nice feature of the belt: it's wider--22 inches versus the standard 20.) The handrails extend only slightly away from the console, so most runners won't hit them with their arm swing. truefitness.com; 800-426-6570
Warranty: 30 years frame / 10 years parts / 1 year labor
Horsepower: 3.0
Belt size: 54 by 22 inches
Maximum speed/incline: 12 mph/15 percent
Programs include: weight loss, speed interval, cardio workout, hill interval, 3 custom programs, and 7 Heart Rate
