WEBSITES AND ONLINE RACE REGISTRATION

PUBLISHED 06/04/2008

In this internet-savvy world, where most runners register for races online, putting together an inexpensive website to promote your race will pay off in increased registrations. This is why a website, or at very least, web registration, is so important. Some helpful tips for starting your online presence:

Include all information in your website that you would in a print brochure, including:
1. Date of race
2. Starting time
3. Start and finish sites, directions, parking info
4. Race distance(s)/type(s)
5. Course description (terrain, elevation, special features, etc)
6. Course map
7. Course/USATF certification info
8. Sponsor recognition
9. Municipality recognition
10. Age group info
11. Prize info
12. Amenitites (T-shirts, food available, etc)
13. Entry details (entry fee, entry deadline, web registration url, payment info)
14. Packet Pick-up info

But also be sure to include your link to your online registration site, since those visiting your website are most likely to register that way.

- To draw potential participants to your website, be sure all your marketing materials and online calendar listings include a link to your website.

- If your race info will be part of a larger site (for example, a park, hospital, etc), include an easy-to-find link to the race site on the home page.

- Include a contact email for questions and be sure to respond promptly to all inquiries.

- Keep your race page current with weekly updates.

- Online registration means less work and more accuracy in the race info you collect. You can encourage online registrations by offering a discount to those who register online or by absorbing the surcharge for this service.
