11/2/2006 NO DECALS IN NYC

For NYC, no street decals at the finish, and hopefully no slips like Cheruiyot's

PUBLISHED 11/02/2006

Robert K. Cheruiyot raised his arms as he reached the finish as champion of October 22's LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon - and slipped, fell, and sustained a concussion. The incident may or may not have been caused by decals on the pavement, but New York City Marathon Director Mary Wittenberg insists ``we're not taking any chances, we're eliminating any risk that's out there," So Sunday's race will not have such decals. The decals and paint used in New York have apparently been tested to make sure they don't cause such slips but ... they're out anyway, in an agreement reached by race organizers, sponsors, and the city.
