TIPS FROM THE TOP: BERNARD LAGAT

Advice from a 2007 World Championship gold medal winner.

By Bob Cooper

PUBLISHED 07/01/2008

Bernard Lagat, 33, of Tucson, won the 1500 and 5000 meters at the 2007 World Championships.

1. PREP FOR HILLS
"When you're doing hill repeats, make sure to lift your knees, pump your arms, and maintain a short, quick stride. This helps create more speed and efficiency."

2. PREP FOR HARD DAYS
"Take it easy the day before speedwork, tempo runs, or any hard workout. Avoid any type of strenuous activity, just as you would before a race."

3. PREP FOR RACING
"Don't make the prerace warmup too easy, or you won't be ready to race. I start my warmup an hour before the race with stretching and running, but no slow jogging."
